Ulviye al Akbatu
Princess of the Free City, Aspirant to the Throne
Niece to the Sultan Kudret, Ruler and High Vizier of the Free City of Akbatustambol, Ulviye was chosen when she was twelve years of age to be one of the Sultan’s Aspirants, Princes and Princesses of the Royal line of Akbatu who vie against each other for the right to be heir to the throne. Ulviye was enrolled at the Royal Academy in the school for Scholars, but most of her education was spent learning to harness the powers of her bloodline. Aside from her arcane power, Ulviye’s natural charm and wit aided her in her the many games of deception and bargaining played in the classrooms of the Academy and in the markets of the city.
It was while engaged in this web of temporary alliances and ongoing rivalries that Ulviye became aware of an unusual student among the students of the Academy. Said to be plucked from the streets, this new student, a girl named Sidika, was one of the anomalous folk called half-orc, born of a human mother and fathered by one of the hundreds of Orc refugees flooding the city in the wake of the fall of the Steppes. Sidika was enrolled in the school for Janissaries, the Sultan’s personal soldiers and guardians. While she was at first repulsed by this strange new student, Ulviye eventually observed and came to respect Sidika’s strong convictions and determination to always speak truthfully. From respect, friendship grew, and Ulviye and Sidika remain strong friends to this day.
After her studies at the Academy were complete, Ulviye spent two years in the Sultan’s household, further refining her connections to her magic and among the local nobility. She then petitioned her uncle for leave to undertake her quest as an Aspirant to prove herself worthy of the Throne. The Sultan consented, and Ulviye journeyed north to the capital city of the Caliphate of Osheau to study in the grand library there, and to begin her games anew. She was not alone in this endeavor, for her friend Sidika traveled with her as her bodyguard.
It was after Ulviye’s return to Akbatustambol that she and Sidika were told of the rumors that Gurang had been rediscovered in the Silent Sea. The Sultan, feeling that his niece was uniquely qualified to undertake this quest, assigned Ulviye a small band of companions to go and confirm the truth of the return of the Island of the Gods.
