Sidika al Yanisar
Janissary bodyguard to Ulviye el Akbatu
Sidika was born to a human mother in the city of Akbatustambol. She does not know who her father is, but assumes he is one of the hundreds of Orc refugees to the city after the fall of Urkana twenty-five years ago. Her mother was a slave in a brothel owned by Zokitar, an Orc gangster and thug. By birth, this made Sidika a slave to Zokitar as well, and she realized at a young age that hers was the same fate as her mother’s unless she was able to act. As far back as she could recall, Sidika had admired the Janissaries who patrolled the city enforcing the will of the Sultan. She was ten years old when she learned that most of the Janissary Corps was made up of people like herself- the destitute, downtrodden, and lowborn, given a chance at glory in service to the Sultan. By the time she was twelve years old, she had plotted her own escape from Zokitar’s compound in the slums, and put her desperate plan into action. She arrived at the gates of the Royal Academy and pleaded to swear the oaths of service immediately. The Janissary corbasci in charge of recruits did not see the slave brand on Sidika’s leg, and so let her undertake the trials and oaths without question. During her time at the Academy, Sidika suffered a sharp degree of persecution from other students in the Scholar, Vizier and Merchant schools, but found that her peers in the Janissary school accepted her without question after she passed her trials. The Janissary candidates found themselves apart from the other students of the Academy, as the political games and webs of connections went beyond the basic principles of the Janissary Code. Sidika’s adherence to the Code and her honesty eventually gained her the respect and friendship of Ulviye al Akbatu, the Sultan’s niece, a student of the Scholars and sorceress by birth. After graduating from the Academy, Sidika was placed in a company of Janissary Rifles and sent on her first duty post in the deserts north of Akbatustambol, patrolling against Gnoll raiders and barbarian incursions from the edges of the Caliphate of Osheau. After serving there for two years, Sidika was assigned to accompany her friend Ulviye north into the Caliphate on her journey to study at the library in the Caliph’s palace.
Physically, Sidika is tall and muscular, with the build of a soldier on active duty.
